I am travelling on sabbatical from 1 July 2023 through 30 June 2024 and will likely be slow responding to work-related email.

Professional

I’m an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada, located in beautiful Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Within the Department, I’m a member of the Computer Security Laboratory.

My recent research is in the area of computer and network security. Previously I worked on problems at the intersection of software engineering and human-computer interaction. In 2023–2025 I plan to return to this area, prior to my retirement in the summer of 2025.

I’m a licensed Professional Engineer, a Senior Member of the the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and a member of the IEEE Computer Society, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Luxuriant Flowing Hair Club for Scientists.

I hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Queen’s University (2006), plus an M.Eng. in Computer Engineering (1994) and a B.Eng. in Engineering Physics (1987), both from the Royal Military College of Canada.

Personal

I served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Signal Officer for twenty years. Since my retirement from the military in 2003 I have cut neither my beard nor my hair, excepting a few gentle trims for symmetry.

In my spare time I like to juggle, ride unicycles, and run long distance (not all at the same time). I’m a member of the International Jugglers’ Association, the Kingston Jugglers’ Club, and the Kingston Road Runners Association.

I am married and have three grown children, all of whom are awesome. My wife Karen is, in my unbiased opinion, the best belly dance teacher in Kingston.
